Atlas Adjustments
Do I Need Atlas Adjustments?
What is the atlas and do I need atlas adjustments? My guess is that a lot of you have heard of the “Atlas” from Greek mythology that holds the weight of the world on his shoulders. Did you know that atlas is also the name of the first bone in your neck? That’s right! The atlas bone sits right below the skull to support the weight of the head. It also surrounds and protects the brainstem. I promise you that by supporting the brain and skull, and protecting the brainstem, the atlas is a very important part of your body.
When the transition between the skull and spine is in ideal alignment, the brain and body can communicate with clarity and ease. All the muscles, ligaments, organs glands and other supporting structures can do their job when the connection is clear. However, when stress becomes too much for the body to handle a subluxation (misalignment of the bones that causes nerve pressure) will occur. Because of the location of the atlas between the skull and the body, a misalignment can affect not only the upper neck but it can impact the nerve flow going down to the rest of the body.
Since the atlas is the first link in the chain of the spine, it is vital to make sure it is checked regularly and adjusted when necessary. Your body will thank you for it. Your health will be grateful for it.
